Day 1 - 2018 Road Trip

Road tripping 2018!!!!!
How We Think We Look....

How We Look For Real

Greetings all! It's summer time which means it's time for another road trip with the Guidry's! Woohoo!!! An added bonus this year, the Landry's are joining us! A couple years ago we spent a week in Whitefish, Montana with Becky & Steven. When we started planning this summer's trip, they showed interest in taking part so it's all four of us on the road! We so enjoyed our road trip out West last summer, so to be fair to all of the continental US we figured we'd do an East Coast trip this summer. When we initially started planning, we made a list (shared doc) of all of our must-see places. Originally, our furthest point was going to be Bar Harbor, Maine, Acadia National Park. We've decided to push even further east and check out some Cajun ancestry in Nova Scotia! We left Thibodaux around 1:00 pm. As tradition has it (and for my mom) the first tune on the play list was On the Road Again by Willie Nelson. Our first destination is NYC so we are hoping to make it midway today which puts us in Knoxville, Tennessee (Hello Rocky Top!).

(So I'm typing this Thursday morning on the road to NYC. We got into Sevierville, TN last night around 12:15 and headed to bed immediately. I'm going to pick up on the rest of the driving on Wednesday afternoon.)

Wednesday Afternoon:
We made a stop in Meridian, Mississippi for restrooms and topping off the tank. I made a couple of purchases that I was going to weave into our supper tonight! To this point supper was a surprise for the Landry's- I had not informed them that I brought it along.

We always bring an ice chest on road trips. We have two full days of driving to get to NYC so we are packing sandwich fixings but I wanted something hot for supper for Day 1. A few days back I started contemplating keeping something hot in the truck for several hours. I began researching and came across the solution. I baked a brick for 30-ish minutes at 350, wrapped it in a towel and placed it in a small lunch kit.

She's a brick...

Wednesday at noon I cooked garlic lime shrimp and a batch of fiesta lime rice. On the road, we assembled burritos with our rice and shrimp and topped it with a homemade chipotle cream sauce. Yummo! Proud to say that the brick did keep the food warm until we ate around 5:30!
Still warm after 5-ish hours!

Supper!

Gas Station Cheese as a Side!

Whenever we travel, or in every day life, I am the dj. I am always in charge of the music whether we are at the camp, on the boat, on the road, or at home. I thought it would be fun to share that responsibility on this trip so months ago I made all participants aware that they were responsible for a play list for the trip. Whatever they wanted, we would all listen to it. A few hours into the trip, Dean announced he wanted to play his play list. Dean went with a themed list. He gathered every song since his birth year (1958) to 2017 listed as Billboard's Number 1 for each year. Of course, there is a competitive nature amongst several of us so it turned into a competition.
Round 1- who has the best song as the number 1 of their birth year.
Round 2- how had the best song the year of their high school graduation.
Tell us what you think! We want to hear from you as to which would be your favorite!

We'll post the results from us as well as how you guys vote!

We've crossed through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and finally Tennessee. For several miles in Gadsden, Alabama there were TONS of fireflies along the interstate!! It was dusk and it was so sweet to see them flickering.

As we enter a new state I dj songs that connect to that state and/or cities, etc. We ran into terrible weather in Georgia. (Dean had me cue up Rainy Night in Georgia on my playlist). Our time in GA was a sort distance- my playlist actually ran longer than our time on the road in the state. I think Midnight Train to Georgia was our favorite singalong followed by a close second to John Mayer's Why Georgia.

We made it into Sieverville, TN (Dolly Parton's home town) after midnight and checked into our hotel. The clerk was from Houma.... wut? We fell quickly to sleep. Our plan is to make it to NYC Thursday evening and spend a couple of nights there.

We'll be in touch! Please give us your opinion on the polls- we're hoping that each of ours wins...

  1. This sounds like such a fun trip!!! I am going to try to keep up with your blog along the way. Fun fact: when I taught at WSL my para was Kim Kizer (best para EVER!!!) well, she now lives in Sieverville, TN! Visited with her a few years ago when we traveled to Gatlinburg. She worked at Dolly World for a few years until she got a para job there. Have fun and safe travels!!!
