Day 2 - June 28

Day 2 route:

We slept so well last night! We got on the road around 7:30 after stopping for our traditional road-trip-Dunkin-Donut-coffee-and-donut!

The weather in Seiverville was nasty this morning. Thunderstorms were around us throughout the night and into the morning. Regardless, we pushed onward! NYC is our destination tonight for a couple of nights. Our arrival time should be around 9:15 pm.

Today has been made up of a string of states that have collectively made for an incredible drive. We live is such a beautiful country. Most of the day was spent driving through Virginia. Wow, just wow. Pretty sure this was my first time driving through Virginia and we all continuously commented on the beautiful landscape. ((....this is where I would insert photos of the scenes I'm describing.... but I can't.... because there aren't any... sorry- my apologies- I promise to do better....))

As it turns out, my oldest brother, Joey/Emmett Jr., is working in Pennsylvania now and gave us a call to talk about our trip and his whereabouts in the area that we were actually approaching. He also called again with some great intel on traffic information that saved us some time. We also saw the pipeline that he and another few people from the Houma/Thibodaux area are working on... Go figure, we are all in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania!

I do have a picture to insert here- while we are on the road I wear many hats. I've already mentioned dj but I am also the navigator. Of course we use Apple maps and Google for GPS but I am a fan of print maps as well, so I also travel with a couple of atlases (my large spiral bound is under my laptop in this picture- a smaller one is in my backpack at my feet). (Believe it or not I am still a huge print fan for books and maps even though I adore technology. I do still take notes in notebooks as well (as seen in the pic below). I typically also write and edit the blog on the road so add that to the mix also. Dean snapped a picture of my workspace this morning...

Note my electricity on the dash...
We so LOVED seeing your results from the poll yesterday, we thought we'd do it again!!!! Here's todays poll for you guys:

When it comes to books you are going to read or maps, which do you prefer? Paper? Electronic? Both? I tend to go both.... just in case... We'd love to hear from you!!!

In regards to music today, Becky shared part of her playlist. She's an old-er soul when it comes to tunes. Mostly 70's easy listening songs filled her list along with Jim Brickman and some patriotic tunes. Steven also shared some of his playlist (thanks John for the tutorials before our departure...). Steven can be described as 80's rock with country intertwined. It was reported from the back seat that Steven had not yet really completed his 'homework' prior to our departure.... He somehow managed to squeak by with a mix that we enjoyed. One bit of trivia I can share with you is that Steven is not a George Michaels fan. I did get a request from a friend inquiring if we had any polkas on the playlist; sorry to say, there is not a single polka.... We do take requests though! Comment below with a suggested tune and I'll be sure to get it heard!

Speaking of music, here are the results of our poll from Day 1:

Favorite Song From Our Birth Years Results:

So, there are four of us on this trip and note that we only have results for three songs... Dean's song Volare didn't even get one vote so it is not included in our results...lol! The people have spoken and the winner is Becky's birth year #1 Joy to the World (pretty sure I grew up with that album in our house thanks to my three older brothers). Nicky's Sugar, Sugar is a close second and obviously we don't have very many Beatles fans for friends (sorry Steven!) Sorry Dean, maybe next time.... When we voted in the truck the results were the same as shown here!

Favorite Song From Our High School Graduation Years Results:

So when we voted in the truck on this one, Silly Love Songs won out- Dean's year.  Faith is Steven's graduation year and I've already mentioned how he feels about George Michaels so figure that! Personally, I love that song. Becky's song ties with Dean in your results and shockingly my Walk Like an Egyptian has come in last.... what were The Bangles thinking, why would anyone want to walk like an Egyptian?

I was able to make reservations for lodging in NYC this morning! We will be resting our heads in the financial district for the next couple of nights! So excited! We also booked ferry rides to Liberty & Ellis Island as well as guided tours of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. It will be a full next couple of days in the Big Apple.

We made it into our rooms around 10:30 and was just too tired to walk out for a cocktail so we are calling it a night to get a full day in tomorrow.

As I'm typing this the local news is on and everyone is in a tizzy because it will be 93 degrees tomorrow. Low humidity but 93! I'm thinking you guys just don't know.... we do hot like no other in South Louisiana, 93 with low humidity? Sounds like heaven....

Thought I'd leave you with a particular picture- here's the back story:

The drive into NYC went well. It was a bit surreal to come around a bend in New Jersey and see the city. The moon was near full if not completely, and was very low in the sky as we approached. STUNNING over the city! Of course it would have been optimal to have Dean snap some pictures but he was driving.... as we made the final approach to Holland Tunnel, traffic slowed enough that Dean took out one of the bigger cameras and set it for me to take a few shots... this is what we saw....

(Cue music) If you get caught between the Moon and New York City...
