AZ '23 - Day 2: December 27, 2023

We woke in Page, Arizona well rested and looking forward to the day ahead.

Glen Canyon Dam Overlook

As we were leaving our hotel we noticed a scenic overlook just across the road so we made a quick stop at the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook. We had a great view of the Glen Canyon Dam as well as the Colorado River.

Waterhole Canyon Experience

We had 9:30 reservations at Waterhole Canyon Experience. We have visited Antelope Canyon in the past as it is the most well-known slot canyon in the area. We opted for this slot canyon tour which is offered through a family who privately owns the land. What an amazing experience it was! We were a group of 15 with our own tour guide, Garrett, who was very knowledgable about the canyons and the area. We went through the three slot canyons at a leisurely pace. He pointed out features of interest as well as great photo opportunities. We had the best time climbing rocks, going through narrow passages and taking in all of the scenery.

Grand Canyon Brewing

Upon leaving Waterhole Canyon we decided to grab some lunch in Page at Grand Canyon Brewing. Dean was not feeling his best, so he napped in the Expedition while the rest of us ate. The location is an old firehouse and is done so very well. We enjoyed local brews and vittles.

The New Wave

An iconic location to visit in Page is The Wave. A permit (very limited amount made available) is required that is obtained through a daily lottery. It was something that was not an option to us on this trip. Steven found an alternative, conveniently named "The New Wave" on Instagram, so we decided to check it out after lunch.  It was just a few minutes away from our lunch location. We parked and got out and began exploring. There were a few other people there, but what an incredible location! It was like a large nature-based jungle gym with all of the built in climbing and exploring! We all spoke about all of our loved ones, especially the younger ones, that would absolutely love this experience!

The Shell Station

During Steven's research on Instagram, he came across a Shell gas station that was a must-see while in Page, AZ. The station was on our way to Horseshoe Bend, so we made our way to it. We all unloaded out of the truck, and started the short trek to the feature. Steven did mention that there was a rock that we needed to step on to cross the fence... sure enough, it all played out exactly as social media stated. We all have to agree, it is a must-see while in the area.

Unassuming Shell Station....

Horseshoe Bend

Our last stop in Page was Horseshoe Bend. The walk to the rim is 1.5 miles on a wide paved sidewalk. It is an incredible site. It is a very popular stop so there are many people/families there. There is only one small spot that is fenced, the rest is walking right up to the edge. Most of us were unwell watching kids and adults getting right up on the edge, almost too close for comfort!

Ending the Day

Our accommodations for the next couple of nights was in Williams, AZ. We headed south and then southwest. Landscape changed from flat, arid desert to somewhat mountainous in Flagstaff and finally trees!

Williams is a quaint town that is The Gateway to the Grand Canyon. Route 66 goes right through the town and they have kept the area true to the nostalgia.
