All of our canyon experience to this point has lead to the biggest, baddest canyon there is....The Grand Canyon!
The Grand Canyon
We went to sleep on Day 2 with Dean running a fever and going to bed at 7 pm. We were unsure how Day 3 would start, having the agenda based on how he was feeling. He woke early feeling well-rested and not feverish and insisted that he was ready for The Canyon. We left our hotel around 8:30 and began the hour drive to the park entrance.
There were crowds and the lines at the entrance gate were long. However, we were so excited that we waited patiently for our turn.
We enjoyed the view at Mathers Point upon our initial entrance. It is tough to find words to accurately describe The Canyon. It is awe inspiring and simply beautiful. We hiked the South Rim trail and stopped in at the Fred Harvey Tavern at the Bright Angel Lodge to grab some lunch. We sat at the bar and our bartender was Tara from Hawaii. As she was going about her work, she turned and looked at Dean and asked, are you from Louisiana?? She's pretty good at picking out where people are from based on their speech and accents. As it turns out, her mother in law lives in New Iberia! We had great conversation about family and life. She said, I'm not a smoker, but I do take my breaks. I get to walk out a few steps and see the South Rim! Each time, it looks so very different than the last. I always snap a picture to preserve that memory. I gave Tara my number and asked her to text a few of her favorite break time memories.

After lunch, we headed back out to the South Rim trail and came upon the Bright Angel trail. It is one of the most popular trails in The Canyon. It does take you to the floor of the Canyon. There is water pipeline construction going on, so only the first 1/2 mile of the trail is available to hike. It was definitely a neat experience to hike into the Canyon, even for just a short while.
We finished our visit at GCNP early evening and drove the one hour drive back to our hotel in Williams. We enjoyed dinner at the Grand Canyon Brewery, their original location.
